"Roy E. Mehmken died April 1, 2016 in Lincoln at St. Elizabeth’s hospital despite the efforts of the wonderful critical care nurses and physicians. Born June 19, 1945 to Herman & Mildred (Balke) Mehmken in Alton, Ill., Roy lived in Edwardsville, Illinois until moving to Omaha, NE with his parents in 1955.
"While attending UNL, Roy was a member of ROTC. After graduating from UNL, he continued his military service in the NE Army National Guard. Roy graduated from UNL College of Law in 1970.
"Roy worked at the NE Dept. of Insurance & the State Capitol as a legislative bill drafter. He then worked in private business before retiring.
"Roy married Patricia Obermiller in June, 1974. They later divorced, but she remained a friend and support to Roy during his challenges with Parkinson’s Disease.
"With Roy’s booming, base voice and distinctive laugh, everyone knew when he was present. He enjoyed politics, UNL football, reading, playing cards and volunteering for the local American Red Cross. He was a member of First Plymouth Congregational Church and particularly liked being on the ushering team as well as a member of the Animal Ministries committee.
"Roy was preceded in death by his parents and daughter, Megan."
